Improved precision in the measurement of the temperature dependence of the refractive index of dye solvents is achieved by using the solvent in a distributed feedback dye laser, and measuring the temperature dependence of the tuning of such a laser. In this way solvents for use in high power dye lasers may be assessed with regard to their thermal properties.
