dc.description Electrical and physical characteristics of the Mackereth-type dissolved oxygen sensor are discussed and recommendations made to optimise response time and output and to maximise cell efficiency, reducing long-term drift (ca-5% a<sup>-1</sup>). Sensor construction, assembly and maintenance are outlined together with useful modifications. Errors involved in calibration and measurement are quantified. Sensor configurations suitable for discrete and also for continuous measurement are given together with their responses to water velocity.
