A simply constructed furnace, heated by convection using continuous gas circulation and suitable for attachment to a standard x-ray diffractometer, is described. High temperature diffractometry using this apparatus is particularly suitable for the measurement of thermal expansion up to 400°C, especially for non-cubic materials. Measurements on copper, silver and zinc are reported in order to illustrate the accuracy of the method and the reliability of the apparatus.
