A silica sample holder and cell for infra-red studies are described; solid samples, in the form of pressed disks, may be heated and decomposed in situ. The dimensions of the disk can vary considerably during the reactions but the holder permits enough freedom for the disk to remain intact. A good compensation for the background can be achieved using a two-cell system.
