A derivative attachment for a recording spectrophotometer is described which gives a direct measurement of the first or second wavelength derivative of the light intensity transmitted by a sample. Such measurements can lead to a better detection of overlapping bands in an absorption spectrum. Methods of calibrating and evaluating the performance of the instrument are given together with a derivative trace of the MoS<sub>2</sub> exciton absorption spectrum which illustrates the advantages of the derivative method. |
