A method is described for determining self and impurity diffusion rates in high vapour pressure solids at cryogenic temperatures. It is based on mass spectrometer analysis of the concentration of a tracer in the vapour in equilibrium with the solid. The major source of possible error lies in determining the effective diffusion surface area of the crystal. In the case of solid argon it is estimated that the diffusion coefficient is obtained to ±3%.
