A double-layer scintillator detector has been designed for the detection of beta particles with a minimal response to gamma radiation, for use in thickness measurements. Measurements indicate that the use of the new detector in a ⁹⁰Sr beta -particle thickness gauge allows the limit of measurable thickness to be raised by approximately 25% over the corresponding thickness using the conventional discriminator method.
