Almost all research work on optical fibre communications has concentrated on increasing the achievable bit rate with no limitation on power consumption. The authors describe the development of a very-low-power, low-cost optical fibre communications link originally designed for use in battery-powered process control instrumentation. Micropower operation is achieved by using a very low mark-space ratio, pulse position coded data format. It has been demonstrated that the charge supplied to the transmitting LED per pulse can be minimised by using pulses which are as short as can be handled by the receiver's bandwidth. For a basic 1 kbaud link, transmitting over several hundred metres, the mean transmitter or receiver current can be as low as 10 mu A. When bit rates increase to levels where special purpose hardware must be used to encode and decode the messages, the current consumption at each end rises as the bit rate increases, but can typically be of the order of 100 mu A. |
