A description is given of a device which uses the thermal expansion of a metal rod to bend at a constant strain rate alkali halide single crystals for use in piezoelectric and internal friction studies. Plastic strains of approximately 10−2 have been produced in potassium chloride and lithium fluoride at strain rates of about 10−7 s−1.
