A previously reported technique for observing the Voigt effect in thin magnetic films suffered from the disadvantages that (i) it was restricted to the investigation of films which possess a uniaxial anisotropy in the film plane and (ii) it resulted in an output voltage signal which, although periodic, was such that detection and measurement by phase sensitive methods was not possible. A new experiment is described which permits the observation and measurement of the Voigt effect in both isotropic and anisotropic thin films and which leads to an output voltage that is both monochromatic and sinusoidal.
