A simple small thermal 'switch' for use at liquid helium temperatures is described which is electrically operated and has no moving parts. It employs a small charcoal sorption pump, located in the cryostat, which can quickly release or pump away helium exchange gas, thus rapidly establishing or breaking thermal contact between two components.
