A system is described in which a quadrupole ion storage trap has been employed as the source for a quadrupole mass filter. A number of possible modes of operation have been examined and results are presented which compare the storage characteristics and mass spectra obtained with established literature data. Some potential areas of application are outlined and the results from a study of ion-molecule reactions in methane included as an example.
