A procedure has been devised for the automatic recording of the amplitude of a voltage standing wave generated by reflection at a normal plane surface as the distance between the sampling probe and reflecting surface is varied. The experimental data, which are recorded in a computer-compatible form, can then be analysed by a suitable statistical procedure such as a nonlinear least-squares method, to provide appropriate values of permittivity and loss.
