Describes a source of high intensity whose spectrum is, say, an order of magnitude narrower than white light or one or two orders of magnitude greater than the spacing of the sodium doublet. Further, broadening is achieved automatically as the lamp warms up. The source is the high-pressure sodium lamp. Its zero order is easily identifiable as a particularly black fringe.
