The author compares five different uses of computers in physics education: tutorial, demonstration, modelling toolkit, laboratory aid and the student as Programmer. It describes examples of each of these uses, most of them from the USA. The author recounts his experiences of developing and using Modelling Toolkit programs, in which the computer provides interactive graphics models of physical systems that help students solve problems.
