dc.description Non-destructive neutron activation analysis has been used to determine manganese and zinc concentrations in biopsy-sized human skin samples. This procedure varies from most conventional neutron activation techniques in that no chemical separations are used. Thus, samples may be studied using other techniques at the completion of the activation analysis. Seventeen samples of skin taken from the scapular region of normal subjects, four samples from patients with lupus erythematosus, one of basal cell carcinoma, one psoriatic erythroderm biopsy and one scleraderma biopsy were studied. In this limited series, patients with scleroderma, basal cell carcinoma and psoriasis erythroderma all manifest zinc concentrations lower than any of the normals. The manganese results in lupus erythematosus are less impressive but possibly suggest a level higher than in most normals.
