Two related methods are described for the determination of the electron density of a small selected volume within an irregular non-uniform object. The immediate medical application for these methods is in the direct measurement of mineral content of bone. The methods involve the manipulation of two beams of gamma -rays. Four intensities are measured, two of transmitted beams and two of scattered radiation. The difference between the two techniques lies in the ranges of energies of gamma -rays that can be used.
