The application of the He-Ne laser beam to the measurement of red cell diameters has been evaluated using diffraction patterns obtained for blood from horses, sheep, cows, chickens and humans. In the case of human cells, the types examined were normal adult haemoglobin, homozygous sickle haemoglobin and homogzygous haemoglobin C.
