The design steps which lead to a collimator which meets the four main requirements of the clinical user are outlined. These requirements are: production of the minimum penumbra, display of the clinically effective radiation field at all times, a beam-defining light field equal to the radiation field and trimmed penumbra such that for all positions of the trimmer block the system remains consistent with the second and third requirements.
