dc.description Flashlamp pumped dye lasers are efficient, simple and relatively inexpensive sources of intense tunable visible light. Combined with frequency doubling crystals, flashlamp pumped dye lasers can provide the high power ultraviolet radiation needed for biological action spectra studies in the near UV range (UVA-UVB, 280-400 mm). The authors were unable to find a commercial unit with the required sensitivity and versatility for their needs within the resources of the project. A monitor and integrator systems was constructed which seems to meet the requirements and which could be adapted for use in many other research applications where the radiant energy delivered to a target of sample needs to be determined. The integrating unit is quite versatile and independent of the signal source; it could be used for accurate integration of any type transducer or other monitoring device producing a voltage output linearly proportional to the quantity to be integrated. The overall design of the system is simple and direct, using concepts and components long used for their individual functions. An analog signal from the UV sensitive transducer is amplified and fed into the integrator. A digital signal directly proportional to the time-integrated irradiance incident on the sample is registered and displayed by the integrating unit.
