As part of an investigation into better methods for specifying radiation quality for application to damage modelling the authors have surveyed published data for fast ion irradiation of mammalian cells in vitro. On the basis of the damage mechanism described here, optimum damage should be caused by accelerated ions having mean free paths for ionisation of 2 nm regardless of ion type with obvious implications for radiotherapy. |
