dc.description In a previous paper (Pert, 1969) the operation of a conical Z-pinch plasma gun was discussed contrast to other work it was found that only about 60 per cent of the plasma ejected from the discharge was accelerated by the electromagnetic forces in the current sheet. The remainder was due to expansion of the pinched gas column. In the work reported in this note the pinching action of the discharge is restrained by the presence of an axial magnetic field. The development of instabilities in the 'pinch' thus formed is also restrained and allows a longer time for the ejection of plasma from the central column. However, as the axial acceleration of plasma by the current sheet takes place only near the discharge axis, electromagnetic acceleration produces a negligible proportion of the ejected plasma in this case due to the restraint of the pinch.
