The theory proposed in 1958 by Alfven to produce longitudinally and poloidally magnetized plasma rings by means of a special plasma gun is reviewed. Some of the published experimental results are presented, in particular those concerned with an unexpected poloidal flux amplification and previous interpretations of this phenomenon are shortly mentioned. A few features of importance for a theoretical explanation are pointed out. Starting with the usual fluid MHD equations and the condition for a pronounced Hall effect, it is indicated how to derive an equation of the Einstein-de Haas effect type relating magnetic flux and plasma rotational motion. This equation explains the generated flux as a consequence of an azimuthal plasma mass motion imparted during the discharge initial stage. Comparisons with the experimental results indicate agreement both as to magnitude and quality. |
