dc.description In plasmas that change rapidly with time electron energy is frequently difficult to determine. Optical and radiometric techniques often cannot be used owing to excessive departures from thermal equilibrium. Various probe, particle energy analyzer or diamagnetism measurement techniques on the other hand can be unreliable or useless because of their disturbance of the plasma, difficulties with the signal-to-noise ratio or questions concerning the interpretation of the data. In weakly or moderately ionized plasmas it is possible under certain conditions to observe a plasma density increase due to ionizing collisions between electrons and neutrals. Since the ionization rate depends on the electron energy it can be used to determine the effective electron temperature. A description of the technique is given. Its use in a low-pressure, high-electric field, toroidal discharge is also reported.
