An investigation of cyclotron instability potential and adiabatic compression of a plasma in a mirror machine

The behaviour of a hollow cylindrical plasma column, produced by fast ions rotating about the axis of the AS machine, is investigated. Initially the ion velocity distribution function is very anisotropic. Oscillations appear and develop in the plasma at the ion cyclotron frequency and its harmonics. The growth and decay rates of the oscillations at the fundamental ion cyclotron frequency are measured and it is found that the decay in amplitude is more rapid than is the decrease in density of the fast ions caused by charge exchange. The plasma potential is also measured.The plasma is subjected to adiabatic compression by a rising magnetic field, after which the plasma decays with a characteristic time which is appreciably shorter than the charge exchange time for the fast ions.
