dc.description The volume dependence of extremal cross sectional areas of the Fermi surface of molybdenum is obtained from de Haas-van Alphen measurements under pressures up to 3 kbar. The experimental data are used (i) to determine the volume dependence of the parameters entering a bandstructure parametrisation scheme based on the Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker method and (ii) to check the accuracy of measurements of the uniaxial stress dependence of the Fermi surface of molybdenum. Best values for the shear strain dependence of extremal cross sections of the Fermi surface are obtained by means of an appropriate combination of hydrostatic and uniaxial stress data. Implications for the validity of the rigid muffin-tin approximation used in the theory of electron-phonon interaction are briefly discussed.
