Hyperfine interactions of scandium nuclei in gadolinium

A combined large electric quadrupole and small magnetic dipole interaction has been observed for <sup>44</sup>Sc nuclei present as dilute impurities in ferromagnetic Gd. The low temperature hyperfine field is +0.35+or-0.15 T. The electric field gradient at <sup>44</sup>Sc shows only a weak temperature dependence within the range 6-300K with a low temperature limit mod eq mod =(4.9+or-0.5)*10<sup>2</sup> Vm<sup>-2</sup>.
