dc.description The temperature dependence of the amplitude of quantum oscillations in ultrasonic attenuation in white tin has been measured with pulsed longitudinal sound waves of frequencies 390 and 430 MHz in magnetic fields up to 88 kG and at temperatures below 4K. The Fermi surface areas have been extracted from the experimental data using digital Fourier analysis. A procedure has been developed for the accurate determination of effective masses from the field-dependent oscillatory attenuation. Several new masses are reported, particularly from orbits arising from magnetic breakdown. For many of the masses comparison is made with other experimental values obtained from the de Haas-van Alphen and magnetostriction data; there are occasional unexplained disagreements. Comparison of the experimental masses with masses calculated by Knoope (1973) using an APW model for the bandstructure yields a mean enhancement factor of 0.94, slightly higher than values obtained by other methods.
