The difficulties in interpreting the observed anomalies in the elastic moduli of Invar alloys below the Curie point are briefly reviewed. An intrinsic magnetic component is obtained explicitly on the basis of the itinerant electron model and found to be given by the spontaneous volume magnetostriction and is thus proportional to the square of the magnetization.
