A rapid energy-dispersive X-ray diffraction (EDXRD) method has been applied to the determination of the ferrite content in austenitic stainless steel (weld metal). No external calibration or standard reference sample is necessary. The analysing times were some minutes. The method was adapted to the measurements of thermal expansion and phase fractions of austenitic stainless steel at temperatures from 17 degrees C to 700 degrees C.
