The validity of the parallel axis theorem for nuclear moments of inertia is examined within the framework of the cranking model. It is shown that this theorem applies only when a requirement of self-consistency between potential and density distribution is imposed. In this case, the theorem follows as a consequence of a gauge invariance property of the cranking model Schrodinger equation. |
