The use of the 38Ar( alpha ,n gamma )41Ca reaction has enabled rigorous spin assignments to be made for five high-spin states: 3369 keV (Jpi =11/2+); 3830 (15/2+); 3914 (13/2+); 3976 (11/2+) and 4519 (13/2+). An E3 transition strength of 24 (+5,-3) Weisskopf units for the 3369 to 0 keV transition encourages a description of the positive parity states by the weak coupling of a 1f7/2 neutron to the 3- and 5- vibrations in 40Ca.
