Nuclear quantum beats have been observed for an ensemble of one- and two-electron 12Ne ions recoiling into vacuum following the reaction 2H(20Ne,p)21Ne*. From the dominant frequency of the recoil-distance beat pattern observed in the singles gamma ray intensity a value for the g factor of mod g mod =0.196(14) was deduced for the 351 keV 5/2+ state of 21Ne. The experiment also led to values of 10.23(20)ps and 10.22(12)ps for the lifetimes of this state and of the mirror 332 keV 5/2+ state of 21Na respectively. Deductions were made of the degree of atomic excitation, within the nuclear lifetime, of the one- and two-electron neon ions.
