Quantum electrodynamics at short distances and the stability of the vacuum

It is shown that the invariant charge of quantum electrodynamics cannot change sign as a function of q<sup>2</sup>. Asymptotically, the invariant charge is given by a non-linear equation that has no real and negative solutions. Contrary to the indications from low-order perturbation theory, therefore, the invariant charge is everywhere non-negative, and the vacuum does not become unstable.
