A test is made of a theoretical prescription for calculating the energy-differential cross section for a stripping reaction A(<sup>3</sup>He, d)B* into the continuum when B* can decay into more than one channel. For given angular momentum of B*, this is given by - pi ImT<sub>aa</sub> (d<sup>2</sup> sigma <sub>a</sub>/dEd Omega )<sup>DWBA</sup>, where T<sub>aa</sub> is a nuclear T-matrix element for p-A scattering at the appropriate energy and the DWBA cross section is calculated using a resonant proton wavefunction. The application here is to two d<sub>3/2</sub> resonances appearing in <sup>12</sup>C(<sup>3</sup>He,d)<sup>13</sup>N* spectra which have been subjected to detailed measurements by Fuchs et al. (1979). The energy dependence of the T-matrix element is taken from the analysis of p-<sup>12</sup>C scattering of a number of groups. The authors obtain quite good agreement in shape and magnitude. This work is an extension of a previous study of the <sup>12</sup>C(d,p)<sup>13</sup>C* reaction by Huby and Kelvin (1975) in that decay to the <sup>12</sup>C(4.43 MeV) state is possible. |
