The principal aim of the wing designer is to increase the maximum loading per unit area of wing. The European Airbus, the third generation of civil jet aircraft, presented particular problems in aerodynamic design. This article describes the development programme at Hawker Siddeley Aviation which led to the 1976 Queen's Award for technological achievement.
