Application of ion cyclotron resonance heating to the Model C stellarator was at first complicated by coupling of power to the plasma through the electric fields associated with the induction coil. This `non-resonant' coupling produced a large influx of impurities which prevented efficient heating of the plasma. Installation of a Faraday shield between the induction coil and the plasma eliminated most of the undesired coupling.
