dc.description Theoretical formulae are derived which give the δ-ray density as function of the velocity and charge of the primary particle, taking into consideration the fact that the electrons in the emulsion are both bound and in motion. The two main types of convention used in deciding which configurations of grains are to be accepted as δ-rays are investigated: those in which the δ-rays must contain more than a specified number of grains, and those in which they must reach a specified distance from the primary track. Account is taken, where necessary, of straggling, multiple scattering, and the fluctuations in the numbers of grains in electron tracks. The theory is compared with the results of δ-ray counts on the tracks of singly charged particles of known velocity. The agreement is very good in the case of the conventions based on range, and fairly satisfactory for the grain-number conventions. The range conventions are found to be preferable in practice as they are more easily learnt and more objective than those in which numbers of grains have to be estimated.
