Measurements of magnetostriction have been made on samples of an anisotropic permanent magnet alloy. From the results it is concluded that the domain magnetization is, in the absence of a field, along that easy crystallographic direction which makes the smallest angle with the axis of anisotropy. This view is supported by measurements of the remanence. The ideal arrangement which obtains after hardening seems to be slightly disturbed during the subsequent tempering operation.
