It is well known that a large electron current passes through a vacuum tube when used for the electrostatic acceleration of positive ions. This paper deals with experiments which show that many of the electrons are produced by neutral particles bombarding the lower end of the tube. The particles are formed in the region of the ion source canal and have a low energy due to the extraction potential. It has been found possible to suppress all the electrons produced below the bottom of the accelerator tube.
