An account is given of measurements of the development of current between un-outgassed electrodes at distances up to 4.5 cm with uniform electric fields at voltages up to 100kv at pressures of the order of 10-5mm Hg. Four distinct stages of development were noted: (i) an initial pre-breakdown stage in which a cold emission of electrons under electric fields of the order of 105 v cm-1 took place; (ii) the occurrence of current pulses of the order of 10-7c at a critical voltage; (iii) larger, repetitive pulses of the order of 10-5c at a slightly higher voltage accompanied by x-ray generation and the release of gas, and (iv) complete breakdown in which the current was determined by circuit constants at a still higher voltage. The pulse threshold voltage for large gaps was determined by the total gap voltage. The development of the field emission initiated arc is discussed in terms of the particle exchange theory and the importance of x-rays and photons and of the release of gas are discussed. |
