The Smoluchowski equation has been used to obtain the distribution function in coordinate space of pairs of molecules in a non-uniform liquid and hence to calculate the viscosity and flow anisotropy. This equation is the first approximation in an expansion of the Kramers-Chandrasekhar equation in inverse powers of the friction constant. In this paper, the second approximation, which leads to a fourth-order differential equation, is considered. The equation is solved numerically and the contributions to the radial distortion of the pair distribution and to the flow anisotropy are calculated for chloroform. It is found that the friction constant must be at least 4×1012 sec-1 for the Smoluchowski equation to be a reasonable approximation.
