Recent experimental results for octahedral fluorine complexes of the type (MF<sub>6</sub>)<sup>4-</sup> indicate that the amount of unpaired spin in 2p orbits on the ligand increases quite rapidly as M is changed from Mn<sup>2+</sup>, 3d<sup>5</sup> to Co<sup>2+</sup>, 3d<sup>7</sup> to Ni<sup>2+</sup>, 3d<sup>8</sup>. It is suggested that this effect can be qualitatively understood by assuming that there is equal charge distribution in the different complexes.
