Recent experimental results for octahedral fluorine complexes of the type (MF₆)^4- indicate that the amount of unpaired spin in 2p orbits on the ligand increases quite rapidly as M is changed from Mn²⁺, 3d⁵ to Co²⁺, 3d⁷ to Ni²⁺, 3d⁸. It is suggested that this effect can be qualitatively understood by assuming that there is equal charge distribution in the different complexes.
