dc.description The entropy of formation of a defect is discussed in the high-temperature harmonic approximation. A defect in a one-dimensional chain and an isotopic defect in a cubic lattice are considered. Exact results are compared with those derived from approximations commonly used for more complicated defects to gain insight into the limitations of these approximate approaches.
