The electron density in a metal will be disturbed when an atom or molecule is chemisorbed. This effect has been investigated using a simple model which describes chemisorption as a sharing of the electrons of the system between the adsorbate and the metal. The disturbance proves to be long range, oscillatory and generally non-isotropic. Numerical estimates are given for alkali metal atoms on tungsten.
