dc.description The aggregation of metal shadowing deposits into smal' crystallites causes a background structure well known to electron microscopists. A different structure has been found to occur with amorphous shadowing materials. The paper describes the form of the structure and it is shown that the main cause is the hydrocarbon deposit formed on surfaces in the evaporating unit. The effect of the statistical distribution of the shadowing atoms on the ultimate resolution obtainable is discussed.
