dc.description A method is described for measuring the length of control specimens of graphite accurately without placing any reliance on the condition of the surfaces of the graphite.A specially shaped groove is turned near each end of the 10 cm long × 1.25 cm diameter specimen, and is filled with flame-sprayed Magnox. A technique is described for producing a high-quality surface on the Magnox on which a diamond indentation under microscopic examination appears as a pair of cross wires.Using the `cross wires' as datum marks, and a high-quality travelling microscope, measurements to an accuracy of 1 in 25 000 are readily attainable. Methods are discussed for increasing this to a possible 1: 100 000.
