dc.description Longitudinal waves are propagated in a wire, one part of which is surrounded by air and the other by a viscous liquid. Waves crossing the air-liquid boundary are partially reflected and a standing wave thus occurs. The wave is also attenuated in the wire by the surrounding liquid. Records of electrical signals proportional to the amplitudes of vibration in the wire have been obtained. Measurements from these records of the standing wave ratio and of attenuation show agreement with the derived theory. The method described has been used to obtain approximate dynamical values of coefficients of viscosity. The effects of a temperature gradient in the liquid have also been experimentally investigated.
