| dc.description | Various methods for evaluating the stress difference at the surface of a photoelastic model are reviewed. In each case the useful field of application, the potential sources of error and the order of accuracy of the measurement are discussed. The greatest difficulties are presented by the determination of boundary values at points of stress concentration and a method for obtaining extrapolated values in such examples, by fitting a polynomial curve to experimental observations at internal points, is described. Provided appropriate care is taken the adoption of this technique permits surface stresses to be measured accurately to ±3%. |
