Striations having a sandwich-like structure have been observed in the Ne - Hg glow discharge operated on 20 c/s to 40 kc/s a.c. It is found that these striations have properties that are different from those which have been observed previously in noble or molecular gases. The optimum pressure of Ne is about 20 torr and that of Hg about 1 mtorr. The spectral characteristics of the striations can be understood on the basis of longitudinal variations in electron energy distribution. Their formation and stability appear to be related to variations in amount of Hg adsorbed on the tube walls.
